Shareholders Force McDonald’s to Reduce Pesticide Exposure
The first-of-its-kind shareholder resolution filed by a college endowment fund has leveraged the giant McDonald’s chain to look seriously at reducing pesticide use. Pesticide use can negatively impact the environment, farm workers, and consumers.
McDonald’s Corporation is the largest buyer of potatoes in the US and has agreed to pursue best practices to reduce pesticides on suppliers’ farms.
“This agreement led to the withdrawal of a shareholder resolution filed by the Bard College Endowment, Newground Social Investment, and the AFL-CIO Reserve Fund. This was the first shareholder resolution focused on environmental and worker health issues ever to be filed by a college or university endowment,” states a press release posted by the Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN).
