As the author of Open Ice, a biography of the late Tim Horton, I want to address statements in Anne Kingston’s column, The New Coffee Climate (Jan. 12). She notes a recent documentary portrayed him as “an alcoholic and a neglectful husband and father, motivated primarily by greed and ambition.”
Mr. Horton was complex and troubled, and often drank too much. But he was not a heartless goon and he was probably as close to his family as the long absences of a professional hockey career would allow. He was far from perfect, but not a pathological monster.
